Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) is a critical consumable substance in most or all of the diesel engine ambulances in our fleet. (Gasoline engines do not use DEF.)
You must top off your DEF tank the next time you fill up with fuel if you see any of the following indicators on your dashboard. (Please keep scrolling down for important instructions.)
DEF pumps are available at some of the City fuel facilities. They are marked with this sign:
Topping off your DEF tank is just like topping of your fuel tank, except you pump DEF into the tank that has the BLUE cap:
NOTE: If the nozzle doesn’t fit properly in the hole, STOP. Do not put DEF in your fuel tank or vice versa.
Failure to top off your DEF tank when you see the dashboard indicator can cause extensive (and expensive) damage to the vehicle. Four of our ambulances have suffered this kind of damage in the past month.
You are authorized and expected to top of the DEF tank on diesel ambulances, especially when you see the dashboard indicator.
