Per the regional EMS council, several hospital pharmacies are having trouble acquiring the dextrose D50W prefilled syringes that are required for stocking the TEMS IV and drug boxes. This is due to a national shortage.
When you check off an IV or drug box, observe whether there is a sticker on top that says “Contains 1 x Dextrose D50W syringe” or “Contains NO Dextrose D50W syringe”. If so, anticipate that once on scene, the team may have to rely more heavily on oral glucose, glucagon, another unit’s drug box, or rapid transport.
Swapping a shorted box from one unit for a fully-stocked box on another unit across volunteer rescue squads or departments is not authorized at this time.
