Ambulance backing guidance

Ambulance backing guidance

Improper backing is one of our top three vehicle safety problem areas.  The following graphic has been reviewed by all squad commanders and provides guidance that we should be using when backing ambulances.

Please note a couple of instructions that may be new to you:

1.    The driver should roll down the windows, to hear voice signals or other noises that might indicate problems.

2.    A second spotter, if available, should be outside the ambulance to watch the unit’s front and passenger side.  This means if you don’t have a patient, there should be no passengers in the ambulance when backing!

Thanks for contributing to a culture of safety in our Department!
