On behalf of EMS Chief Ed Brazle, we are pleased to announce four current members and one former member will join the career medic team starting July 22nd. Four positions are additions added this budget year by the City Manager and approved City Council and one replaces the vacancy created with the promotion of Erik Svejda to EMS Captain.
Paramedic Erol Aydar. Erol began his EMS career in 1978 with Lakeside Volunteer Rescue Squad in Richmond. He has served with several volunteer rescue squads across the state Tuckahoe Volunteer Rescue Squad for 17 years prior to moving to Virginia Beach. He also served as a flight medic with EMS Med-Flight based in Chesterfield, VA. He joined the Virginia Beach Volunteer Rescue squad as a paramedic in 2010 when he moved to the area and is an ALS FTO.
Paramedic Russell Blow. Rusty rejoined the Virginia Beach EMS family recently as a volunteer with Kempsville Rescue Squad after his retirement from Medical Transport. He had originally been a member with Kempsville from 1987 to 2008 and earned his paramedic in 1990. Rusty has previously severed on the State EMS Advisory Board and as a program representative with Tidewater Community College.
Paramedic Julia Blythe. Julia started her EMS journey in New York with the Onetonta State Emergency Squad in 2008. She joined Kempsville Rescue Squad in 2013 as a paramedic and has served as transport medic and with the US Navy. She most recently worked as an emergency department tech with Sentara Princess Anne Hospital..
Paramedic Nicholas DiCaprio. Nick began his EMS career with Kempsville Rescue Squad in 2006 advancing to paramedic and ALS FTO before leaving in 2010. Since, he has functioned as a paramedic and firefighter with local agencies and a proctor for Tidewater Community College. He comes back to us from Suffolk Fire and Rescue.
Paramedic Jason Thurston. Jason began his EMS career with Norfolk Fire Rescue in 1995. He joined Princess Anne Courthouse volunteer Rescue Squad in 2012 as a paramedic. He has worked as a paramedic firefighter and transport medic and is a communications specialist with VA – DMAT 1.
